Byrd Theatre Foundation announces plans to purchase new 4K digital projector

The new state-of-the-art projection system will rival those of Richmond’s largest multiplexes.

Last week, we reported on the Byrd Theatre’s defunct digital projector. We’re happy to report the nonprofit now has a plan to purchase a brand new, state-of-the-art 4K projector that will rival those of the city’s largest multiplexes.

From The Byrd Theatre Foundation:

This July, the historic Byrd Theatre will become one of a handful of Richmond screens offering the latest in cinema technology, and the only local theater providing the highest quality projection for every film.

The Byrd Theatre Foundation announces the purchase of a new Barco DP4K-32B Digital Cinema Projector with installation expected next week. “The new 4K projector will provide a dramatically enhanced cinematic experience to the already unique treasure that is The Byrd Theatre,” said Gibson Worsham, president of the Byrd Theatre Foundation’s board of directors.

The announcement follows the loss of the theater’s original digital projector, which ceased operating in early June and could not be repaired. “Fortunately, the Foundation had done its research and, thanks to our donors, was prepared to make the investment. The projector is part of the larger plan to restore and preserve the Theater and reposition it for a strong future,” Worsham explained. “Now we can offer the newest cinematic technology, which enables us to expand our programming and grow our audiences at the Theatre.”

Despite the loss of the old projector three weeks ago, the Theatre has been continuously operating with the use of its classic 35mm film projector.

In 2007, the Byrd Theatre Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, was formed to purchase, preserve, and maintain the historic Byrd Theatre, which opened in 1928. The Foundation is executing a revitalization plan to achieve the vision of establishing the Theater as a center for film while ensuring it continues to provide the broadest possible public access to exceptional cinematic experiences.
