Local band and author team up to help poor Chinese students
A new novel inspired Black Girls to cover a famous Stooges song to help needy students in Shanghai.
VCU alum and teacher Kirk Kjeldsen’s debut novel, Tomorrow City,1 officially comes out today, and with it a chance to help support Chinese students.
Two of his former students in the VCUarts Cinema program were Black Girls guitarist Mike Bryant and drummer Stephen Farris. Kjeldsen provided them an advanced copy of the book earlier this year, said Kjeldsen in an email. While Black Girls was in the studio to record their second album last month, the band also recorded their version of “Search and Destroy” by The Stooges. The song is featured in the novel, which largely takes place in Shanghai where Kjeldsen now lives.
“Search and Destroy” is now available free to download. For every 500 times it’s downloaded, eye care and a year’s worth of schooling will be given to up to ten disadvantaged Chinese child through the nonprofit Stepping Stones China. The funding will come from Kjeldsen and an anonymous Chinese donor.
