The pride of Richmond

Richmonders are nothing if not opinionated, am I right? We spend a lot of time going on about things we want to see change, but let’s focus on the things we love about this city for a minute…

What about Richmond makes you proud to live here?

C’mon. It’s Friday. Get a posi start to the weekend. Leave some Richmond love bombs in the comments.

I moved to Richmond almost 5 years ago. As a RVA noob, I love the easy access to history lessons for the kids (and me), they’re all around. I also love the trees. There are more trees on my lot in Brandermill than there were in my whole neighborhood in California.

I also love the outdoors. I’m a running noob, and I love the Richmond Marathon event (ran the half last year and I’ll run the full this fall) and the Monument 10k. I think I may try either the Riverrock 10k or Carytown 10k in May. Plus all the smaller races like the Blaze 5k and GRSCAN 5k. Always lots of fun!

There’s definitely a greater sense of community in Richmond than anywhere else I’ve lived.

    Richmond ROCKS!

So many things. But I’ll list a few:

    – The ability to drive 2 hours west and be in the thick of the mountains, and 2 hours east and soaking feet in the Atlantic
    – Quiet picnics at Hollywood Cemetery
    – Walking on cobblestones that some of the founding fathers also walked on
    – The beautiful statues on Monument Avenue
    – Lazy summer days spent floating in the James
    – Walkability
    – The confusion, wonderment, and all-day drinking of a snow day
    – George Washington keeping watch over us from Capitol Square
    – The painted ceiling of the Dooley house
    – Fog on the James in the early morning
    – Neighbors who bang on my door if my car’s about to be towed, and sweep the sidewalk occasionally in front of my house
    – Going out and knowing most of the people I see
    – A ridiculous amount of space for not very much rent
    – Farmer’s markets galore
    – The sound of cicadas

I like the things that make Richmond special

    - Two types of hookers: obvious transexuals and undercover police.
    - Palpable racial tension that’ll snap like a rubber band
    - Folks don’t waste time with turn signals
    - VCU college gets every weirdo in the whole state
-So humid in the Summer that a webbing forms between your leg and sack
    - Ukrop’s still gets it’s sweet family’s ass kissed despite running Howard Stern and Marilyn Manson out of town.
    - Using a fake good-old-boy accent will get you out of a ticket.
    - Discarded pieces of weave in every parking lot
    - At least as many old people as Florida, and they’re twice as slow moving
    - Possums the size of beanbag chairs
