RVA gets some color with Color Me Rad race

Have you ever woken up in the morning and thought: “Man, I wish someone would throw colored cornstarch in my face and spray me with colored water while I run exactly 3.1 miles?” You have?? Well get excited! There’s a race just like that touring the country, and it’s called Color Me Rad.¹ It’s coming to Richmond in July.

Two weeks ago my wife, Christi, and I took part in Color Me Rad in Virginia Beach to prepare RVA for what’s coming in just two months.² I was particularly eager because it was Christi’s very first race, and I was excited for her to have that “race experience.” Matt Ward, one of the organizers of Color Me Rad, said that’s what this race is all about. He called it a “gateway drug to running.”

Ward and three other thirty-somethings started the Utah-based Spring Bok Group, LLC three years ago. Their first race was a (now annual) mud run called the Dirty Dash. Ward said he recalled seeing the spectacle of Holi, the Indian Festival of Colors and was wowed by it. Ward wanted a race that was “in the same vein” as the colorful celebration, and so Color Me Rad was born. This is the first year for the 5K.

In a nutshell, the race is a fun, leisurely, light-hearted, non-competitive (and very colorful) race that benefits one local non-profit. In Virginia Beach, only the second city ever to hold the event, Color Me Rad raised $17,000 for the city’s YMCA.

You can expect to end the race completely covered in various colors of cornstarch. You’ll probably find blue, red, yellow, and green in your nose, ears, and other parts of your body that are normally not rainbow colored. You can also expect to run with men and women, kids and strollers, runners, joggers, and walkers. It’s not timed. And it’s definitely not clean.

If you’re a competitive runner and you don’t know how to turn your competitive switch off or you are looking to “beat your 5K time”, then this race is probably not for you. You can expect long lines, traffic, late starts times, and things that slow down your pace.

However, if you want to have fun and you don’t mind getting messy, then you’ll probably have a great time! It’s for a great cause too. The Richmond event will benefit Special Olympics Virginia. Just enter the promo code “specialolympics” to donate 20% of your registration fee to them. “We’re super excited to work with them,” said Ward about Color Me Rad’s Richmond partner. He said the goal is to raise $20,000 for the nonprofit.

So bring your friends and family because there are major opportunities for laughs, big colorful pictures, and great memories.

2011 Garden Wars: The compost pile, week 5

Look who just got launched into the compost pile this week! We would like to welcome our second loser, Jorge Salgado, to the place where gardeners go to die, so that they may live!

These Black Krim heirlooms were bursting at the seams after the rains that came through recently. Aside from a couple splits, they tasted great straight. But, also a good backdrop for some good quality olive oil, aged balsamic, basil leaves, and fresh mozzarella. Next up, chunky raw tomato sauce tossed with Bombolini pasta, washed down with cold pilsner.

And the instagraming (sp?) continues!! This is what became of those delicious tomatoes above. We sliced them, we diced them (not really) and munched them down. When I say this may have been the best tomatoes of the season, I'm not kidding. Surely much better than anything out of Smartt's garden. ZING.

As you may have heard, Weather Dan is out chasing storms for the next couple weeks and reporting from the road. However, we still have to know the weather, right? So for the next couple weeks I'll be snooping some other websites (local and national) and will combine/summarize/makeup my own forecasts.

Frankly, I wonder if anyone can actually predict the weather accurately! Here are your next three days!

Gardening 2011

I get so excited for this time every year: when the weather gets warmer, grass gets greener, flip flops become a main part of my wardrobe, and I start planning for my annual vegetable garden. Although I’ve only been a "home gardener" for five seasons I’ve learned a thing or two along the way when dealing with limited space around the house.

My set up is simple really. I have three 3‘ x 6’ x 8" boxes in my backyard filled with dirt (more on this in a bit). I also try to use a few standalone pots and random areas around my house where my neighbors won’t be too mad for slightly overstepping my boundaries. (I tend to give them veggies throughout the summer so they feel bad complaining!) Because of the space constraints, I use the Square Foot Gardening theory which in short is breaking up your box in square foot areas, planting different plants in each square, and growing all your vegetables vertically to save space.

Each year I learn a thing or two -- finding successes and failures -- to improve my layout or gardening strategy for the next year. Last year I learned about "hand pollination." That's right, put the male to female and BAM! Why did I do this? It was fun, duh! Annnd I seemed to be missing one important part of my garden: bees. The only choice I had was to "do it" myself and so I started hand pollinating my squash, zucchini, and cukes and as a result my plants flourished. I started pulling in 10-15 squash and zucchini’s a week!

However much to my surprise I also had to learn more about dirt, its PH levels, and how that affects your veggies. In particular my tomatoes were extremely were sour and the biggest letdown of last season! Especially when you have about 10-15 tomato plants!

So to replenish the nutrients in my garden and fix my Ph levels I completely replaced the dirt in all three of my boxes. I decided to use Mel’s Mix which consists of 3 equal parts of vermiculite, compost, and peat moss. That mix DID cost me around $65, however I will have this mix (only adding compost) for the next three seasons. I also don’t have to worry about rotating any of my crops to prevent disease and replenish nutrients, it’s like starting new. I’m still planning on hand pollinating (bees or no bees!) to get a head start on the season!

So when should you start? Now. It’s a great time to start preparing your soil and getting those early spring crops (lettuce, spinach, kale, peas) in the ground. They can usually stand light frosts until we get out of the frost season (beginning mid April) and launch you right into spring!

I will start planting summer veggies in mid-April. I only plant cucumbers from seed, most everything else is already started by local nurseries -- an unfortunate downfall to limited indoor space. I also do this because squirrels LOOOVE digging for seeds.

Taylor says: Not just a brass band...ALL TROMBONES!!!!!!!!!! Well contrabas,s too of course (not to be forgotten!), but WOW! This is pure joy to me, as it combines my love for brass bands and my love for crazy loud wailing vocals.

Scott says: When Reggie Pace (tireless trombonist with No BS Brass) told me about this band, it sounded too good to be true. Then he said they were from Newport News, and I was instantly bummed that I hadn't been to their church yet. Now they're coming to Richmond, and I must go at all costs!

Professional Bio

In 1903, an African-Portuguese immigrant named Marcelino Manoel da Graca (Charles Manuel Grace), the son of a stonecutter from the Cape Verdean Island of Brava, came to the southeastern Massachusetts town of New Bedford. “Daddy Grace,” as he became known, was a dynamic spiritual leader who started the United House of Prayer. The United House of Prayer congregation eventually reached up and down the east coast, with one of its first and most successful churches in Newport News, Virginia. One of the hallmarks of United House of Prayer church services, baptisms, funerals, and parades is the exclusive use of brass instruments, inspired by the words of Psalm 150: “Praise ye the Lord. Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet...” The United House of Prayer brass bands came to be known as “shout bands” because of their ability to move entire congregations to shout with heartfelt spiritual energy. The Madison Hummingbirds, of Portsmouth, are the current torch bearers of the great Virginia shout band tradition. As has been the case for generations in the House of Prayer, they have been carefully bringing along “The Rookies,” a group of young men that will comprise the next generation of Hummingbirds.

Klezmer is a musical tradition which parallels Hasidic and Ashkenazic, Judaism. The Charlottesville and New York City based duo of Joel Rubin and Pete Rushefsky performs Eastern European Jewish instrumental klezmer music and hasidic /nigunim/ (religious melodies of spiritual elevation), a meditation on the Russian-Jewish musical legacy. The music draws its inspiration from the publications of the ethnomusicologist Moshe Beregovski, which were based on Beregovski’s own fieldwork in the Ukraine and Byelorussia from 1927 to 1948. Rubin has specialized in the repertoire from these collections for the past fifteen years, which he regards as the deepest inspiration for his exploration of all phases of the complex klezmer tradition, from 19th century Eastern Europe to the 21st century transnationally.

Dr. Nader Majd, of Arlington, VA, was born in Sari, Iran, and began studying and playing the santur (hammerd dulcimer) and violin at the age of six. A year later, he received his education in tar and setar (plucked instruments) from his father and uncles who were well known artists in Iran. All these instruments are critical to prayer music in Iran. Dr. Majd immigrated to the United States in 1968. He started The Center for Persian Classical Music (CPCM) in 1997 “to make Persian Classical music known to our American friends as a means to increase understanding between our two countries.” The CPCM employs the universal language of music as a tool for communication and cultural exchange.

A cantor is a singer who assists the Rabbi with prayer in the Jewish Synagogue tradition. Cantor Alsschul was born in St. Petersburg, Russia. She spent her formative years in Israel and came to New York City as a graduate college student. There she was drawn into synagogue life through her love of Jewish music. A trained mezzo-soprano, her performance experiences have included appearances with the Russian Chamber Choir, the New York Brooklyn College Opera Theater, the Haifa Symphony Orchestra, Israel, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, Israel, and the Tel-Aviv Philharmonic Choir, Israel. Cantor Altshul was also twice invited to sing at The President’s Residence in Jerusalem

Taylor: It is always interesting do see such different traditions represented in the same genre. Super soulful vocals, sometimes accompanied, and sometimes a cappella, Maggie Ingram and the Ingramettes (best word ever) are sure to please.

Professional Bio

Born July 4, 1930, on Mulholland’s Plantation in Coffee County, Georgia, Maggie Ingram worked in the cotton and tobacco fields with her parents. She began playing the piano and singing at an early age and exhibited a great love for church and for the ministry of the gospel of Jesus Christ. At 16, she married Thomas Jefferson Ingram whose family also worked as sharecroppers in Georgia. It was from these humble beginnings that the Ingramettes were formed. Sister Maggie Ingram and The Ingramettes were soon a sought after group to sing at churches, gospel festivals, auditoriums, church conferences, and other places throughout Florida. In December 1961, Ms. Ingram moved her family to Richmond, Virginia. .Ms. Ingram found employment in the home of Oliver W. Hill, Sr., an energetic attorney who was working on a civil rights case. She also began a prison ministry with her children and partnered with the Mt. Gilead Baptist Church in the 1970’s. In the years since, the Ingramettes have received numerous awards including most recently the prestigious Virginia Heritage Award!
