How about dinner for a great cause? Join us at Perly’s Restaurant (111 East Grace Street – Richmond) on February 16, 2012 from 5:30 – 8:30 pm for a great spaghetti dinner and at the same time support William Byrd Community House. Eat-in or takeout options available.
Tickets are $15.00 per person and are available for advanced sales only. If you are not able to attend, maybe you would consider a donation so that a child from one of our programs could have great meal. Checks are to be made payable to William Byrd Community House.

VCU Move In Days this weekend

Friends of VCU,
It is time for all new and returning VCU students to begin moving in. This process may impact all of us in different ways. In an effort to better manage, I am attaching our move in maps for both the Monroe Park Campus and the MCV campus. We will begin blocking off surrounding streets at approximately 6:00 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday and will end the process at 7pm on Saturday and 6pm on Sunday. I am also attaching the informational letter we send to students about how the process works.

Today undefeated Chesterfield County, Va continued their streak against West Tokyo, Japan in the 59th PONY League World Series to pull off a 3-1 victory. This is the first World Series win for Chesterfield County in their history.

Keep in mind that the high speed rail now being bandied about would skip downtown Richmond altogether. Former City Council member Bill Pantele noticed.

Bike Accident, But Not In Oregon Hill

Earlier today, a vehicle hit a bicyclist at or near the corner of S. 4th Street and Canal. I do not have much info on the accident, other than to say I saw the reporting go past on the City’s Current Incident site. It said that the bicyclist was bleeding from the mouth.

The location is not in the neighborhood, but since this falls in nearby downtown in a sort of grey area where I do not know of any current community blog coverage, I figured I would bring some attention to it here. I do not know who is at fault, but it concerns me nonetheless. Hopefully, the Mayor’s new committee on pedestrian and bicycles will eventually weigh in on possibly how to prevent. Ride/drive safe, the life you save maybe your own.

The above view is looking east towards downtown. It looks like the fire might have started at a homeless encampment that’s in the trees just a few feet to the east of the site, but that’s just conjecture.

I also have heard unofficial accounts that, around the same time last night, there was some wine stolen from the 7-11 on Belvidere and a subsequent car hit and run, plus a suicide threat to jump off the Lee Bridge- but again, no official word as of yet.

Dogs must have current shots, mix well with others and remain on a leash. Owners are responsible for water and cleaning up after their dogs. Meet at Cherry and Idlewood streets..

$5000 Award Offered for Missing VCU International Student

Virginia Commonwealth University yesterday offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the location of Jonathan S. Dorey, a foreign-exchange student who has been missing more than a week.

40,000,000 in budget cuts? That’s a lot of zeros.

According to the RTD, Chesterfield County is cutting budget again and teachers are going to feel part of that pain, not to mention specialty centers, athletics, and other areas as well.

Train and SUV Collide

This evening at Robious and Huguenot a train struck an SUV and according to the RTD the “train hit the SUV, which spun and struck another vehicle.” Also reported, by Chesterfield County Police Lt. Jeff Parlier, the only injury was when the driver of the SUV tried to look at his vehicle and slipped on a patch of ice. Ouch!

1000 Coats stolen from Chesterfield Town Center

90+ elders evacuated in 3-alarm fire

Yesterday at 9:00pm a fire broke out in Chesterfield Square Apartments near Chippenham Hospital on Hioakes Road. After evacuating, a shelter was set up at Bon Air Baptist Church on Buford Road.

According to CBS 6 this morning

CBS 6 has learned the residents of the Chesterfield Square Apartments evacuated to Chippenham Hospital have been either reunited with their families or transported to Bon Air Baptist Church where they are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.

HUGE bowling pin advertisement in contention near Brandermill

So there’s a new Bowling Alley or “entertainment complex” that could be coming to Commonwealth Centre. It’s “52,000-square-[feet] … would boast 40 bowling lanes on two floors, two restaurants with outside dining, arcades and private party rooms on a 12-acre” according to the RTD.

The actual complex is not really the problem but the sign on top of the building that can be seen from 360 and light up at night has some Brandermill Residents and the Planning Commission concerned.

I don’t see what the big deal is really, it’s ONLY a massive BOWLING PIN that LIGHTS UP at night. It’s kind of like the Roanoke Star that can even be seen from I-81, except it’s a bowling pin.

Fire on Saturday morning

At 16224 Hampton Summit Drive a fire broke out around 7:00 am. All 5 people that were in the house made it out okay. More details to come, the Fire Department is still looking into the cause.

Famous Dave’s robbed but employeefights back.

Police are investigating a robbery that occurred at Famous Dave’s at 10201 Midlothian Turnpike at about 10:10 p.m. on Aug. 26.

Three masked suspects entered the business through an unlocked back door as employees were preparing to close for the day. One suspect entered the office and stole money while a second suspect approached another employee and demanded money at gunpoint. The employee struggled with the suspect and obtained the gun before all three suspects fled. No one was injured.

The suspects are black males and wore black clothing. Two suspects wore black skull hats and gray bandanas. The third suspect wore a blue bandana.

In the event of a robbery, police remind victims to comply with the suspect/s demands, avoid escalating the situation, call 911 after suspect/s leave the building and secure all doors until police arrive.

Fire truck collides with dump truck

Yesterday, August 27, a fire truck collided with a dump truck on Iron Bridge Road. The dump truck driver and two firefighters were taken to VCU Medical Center with minor injuries. Part of the eastbound lane was closed from Rock Spring Drive to Cogbill Road because of the crash.

Board defers decision on noise ordinance for 30 days

The Chesterfield County Board was going to decide on a noise ordinance that was possibly going to be adopted from Virginia Beach. However, everyone still needed more information to make a clear decision so people are going to be researching a bit more in order to make that decision.
