Whether it’s a reminder of a loved one, a good story, or simply to showcase the work of an artist whose style you fancy, tattoos abound in the Capital City. There’s a good chance if you aren’t a tattooed Richmonder, you know someone who is. Recently named the third most tattooed city in the country, Richmond is filled with talented tattoo artists and their walking canvases.

Below you’ll find images showcasing some of the ink being sported by residents of the River City -- individuals representing a variety of professions and walks of life but with a similar desire to tell a story on their skin.

Sean Patrick Rhorer: 31; head of digital technology for label collective; 8 tattoos total

Tattoo pictured: St. Francis of Assisi -- “Blessed are those who endure in peace”
Artist: Katie Davis at Salvation Tattoo, Richmond

“I got it because I like what St. Francis stands for – I like his ideology. It kind of serves as a reminder to me of how I should try to be.”

Taryn-Dee Barnes: 27; rehab tech; 8 tattoos total

Tattoo pictured: Boat and flowers, “1956 – 2004”, and the initials “SPB”
Artist: Fred Pinckard at Salvation Tattoo, Richmond

“When my Dad passed away, I wanted to get a piece in his memory. It’s the boat we had when I was growing up and the calla lilies we had at his service. [The scar is from donating a kidney to a friend.] It’s special because on that side I have a tattoo in honor of a life lost and a scar representative of the continuation of life.”

Marshall Brown: 26; jeweler; 12 tattoos total

Tattoo pictured: Octopus tentacles coming out of ink and owl skull
Artist: Hisako Shirasaki, visiting artist from Japan

"This tattoo was the illustration of feelings I had over a long period of healing due to the loss of one of my closest friends. In all things that ‘be’ will come to pass and all things that pass feed what is ‘to be’. Clinging to that which ‘was’ will rob you of what this death could have conceived."

Matt Fisher: 26; middle school disciplinary coordinator; 12 or 13 tattoos total

Tattoo pictured: Lion inspired by The Chronicles of Narnia –- “Death itself would start working backwards”.
Artist: Fred Pinckard at Salvation Tattoo, Richmond

“I used to be a door guy [at a bar] and they used to project different movies onto the wall. One night they played The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. There was a scene where the witch kills Aslan and the girls cry but then he comes back -- it’s no real secret that C.S. Lewis was a Christian writer and that was supposed to represent that hopeful rebirth -- so when that scene played, and I was surround by all this bullshit cacophony, I became really emotional. That’s a moment I will always remember.”

Nathan Cushing: 27; graduate student and graduate teaching assistant; about 31 tattoos total

Tattoo pictured: Fortune Teller predicting ‘yes’ or ‘no’
Artist: Fred Pinckard at Salvation Tattoo, Richmond

“I thought about getting it shortly after a relationship concluded. I wanted to get something that had a slightly melancholic feeling about marriage but also a hopeful one. And the ‘yes’ ‘no’ part, I would say, is symbolizing the unknown.

Matthew McDonald: 29; designer; 17 tattoos total

Tattoo pictured: Girl in sombrero
Artist: Mike Rennie at Absolute Art, Richmond

“I was at Absolute one day talking about the idea and asked Mike about it. I said I wanted a girl in a sombrero on my arm in black and grey -- it was cool because he seemed really stoked on it.”

Jenny Fisher: 29; art teacher; 5 tattoos total

Tattoo pictured: Ocean, mermaid sunbathing [unfinished because she is a soon-to-be mom]
Artist: Fred Pinckard at Salvation Tattoo, Richmond

“I had always wanted to get a sleeve but it was such a ‘no-no’ to be a teacher and get tattooed where you can’t really hide them. So, I finally just broke down and did it. I just think women with sleeve tattoos is such a beautiful thing.”

Colin Ackerman: 27; shop assistant; 30ish tattoos total

Tattoo pictured: Gypsy
Artist: Brian Bruno at Absolute Art, Richmond

“This is my ‘grandma dedication’ tattoo. She was given up for adoption when she was a kid in Turkey. We don’t really know where she’s from because her mom burned all the documents but we think she came from a gypsy compound.”

Jodi Krahn: 26; retail sales; 5 tattoos total, plus sleeve

Tattoo pictured: Art nouveau owl –- “Kiki”
Artist: Don Sellers at Tattoo 702, Richmond

“My grandmother collected owls and I wanted to get something for her. This one was originally supposed to be just a moustache, but since Amy and I are such tight buds, she let me add the dollar signs for eyes and the text. I always think I'm going to do a bunch of killer stuff for Spring break, but then it comes and I'm always broke because I have kids and a meager teacher's salary. I couldn't even pay for the tattoo, so I cleaned up the shop for her in exchange.”

Gregory Ernst (Elway): 33; sales manager and drummer; 5 tattoos total

Tattoo pictured: The Murdock
Artist: Designed by Myles Karr, tattoo done by Dave Lopez at Ron & Dave’s Tattoo, Staten Island, New York

“The art appears inside Murdock’s first 7” record from 1997.

Wayne Walker and his team at Richmond Fisher House have made it their goal to ease the hardships experienced by families of veterans injured in combat.

The house was built in July 2008 by the Fisher House Foundation at the Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center, located on Broad Rock Boulevard. The Fisher House Foundation was created to help support America's military families by providing comfortable, on-site living accommodations for the loved ones of soldiers receiving medical care.

Walker, a retired Army Command Sergeant Major, manages the Richmond Fisher House. His goal is to provide a home away from home.

“I am a combat veteran [and] I can relate to what a lot of these families are going through,” Walker said. “Some of these families stay here for a long period of time, and we get pretty close to them.”

The over 16,000 square foot house has 21 bedrooms, a dining room, living room, family room, and communal kitchen. It’s one of the largest Fisher Houses out of the 45 in existence, not including 12 more houses still in planning stages. Since it's inception, Walker said roughly 1500 family members have stayed at the Richmond Fisher House.

"The Fisher House is important because families need a place to stay when their loved one is being treated in the hospital, and some of them financially don’t have the capability to spend money for hotels," said Avila Porter, Richmond Fisher House program support assistant.

The Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center is the largest Veterans Affairs hospital in the country and one of only four Level 1 polytrauma centers.

“These sites provide comprehensive acute care and rehabilitation for veterans with the most severe wounds, many of whom arrive straight from military hospitals such as Walter Reed Army Medical Center,” stated the Department of Veterans Affairs website.

While veterans are receiving care at the hospital, family members who stay at the Fisher House have access to all the amenities of home, free of charge, including a washer and dryer, personal bathrooms, a library full of books and DVDs, linens, and a play area for kids, just to name a few. There is even an outdoor playground set up exclusively for guests.

"It’s stressful for kids to have to sit in a hospital all day, and the playground gives the kids a chance to run around and blow off some steam," Walker said.

Fisher House relies on the generous donations of individuals and organizations to keep the facility running smoothly. Several local organizations, including Blue Star Mothers of America, Golden Skillet Chicken, and Texas Roadhouse provide weekly meals for the families staying at Fisher House.

"My staff and I spend a lot of time thinking outside the box," Walker said. "We are always trying to figure out ways to provide better services."

Those interested in making a donation can visit the Richmond Fisher House website wishlist or contact Wayne Walker directly (Wayne.Walker@va.gov or 804-675-6601) for a list of needed items.

Ho there, reader of RSS feeds!
Landlord-Tenant Law: Rules to live by

Deciphering landlord-tenant lease agreements can be overwhelming. Take it from me -- with eight years of rental history under my belt, I've signed on the dotted line many times. Investigate the reputation of real estate agencies from whom you're thinking about renting, and more importantly, do your homework on landlord-tenant laws. Before signing what could arguably be a life-changing document, taking a little extra time can pay off big.

Martin Wegbreit, senior managing attorney at Central Virginia Legal Aid Society in Richmond, said there are several ways prospective tenants can protect themselves. First and foremost, Wegbreit said tenants should read and understand their lease. While this might sound like a no-brainer, going through the lease with the landlord ensures there will be no surprises in the future.

“Under Virginia law, if you sign something it means three things: you read it, you understand it, and you agree with it.”

In addition to understanding the lease, tenants should know what is in writing always trumps verbal agreements. If you sign a lease that restricts pets and later your landlord says it's fine to get a puppy, get it in writing. Any amendments to the lease should be initialed and dated by the tenant and landlord. Also, keep in mind that if certain promises are made to you about extras not outlined in the lease, the landlord is not obligated to fulfill them.

“If there is any difference between what is in writing and what is spoken, what’s in writing controls,” Webreit said.

It's also helpful to acquaint yourself with state laws and regulations regarding the renter/tenant relationship. The Virginia Residential Landlord and Tenant Act Handbook, a section of the Code of Virginia, covers rental agreements involving:

Apartments/Multi-family dwellings

Hotels/Motels/Manufactured homes

Public Housing and Housing Choice Vouchers (also known as Section 8)

Single-family dwellings (as long as the landlord owns and rents more than four dwellings)

The Virginia Landlord Tenant Act also acts as a standard, making all leases subordinate to its regulations, no matter what.

“When entering into rental agreements, landlords and tenants may be unaware of important rights and obligations, such as a landlord’s right to charge an application fee and the requirements for its return; interest earned on security deposits; and the rights and responsibilities involved in rental agreements,” states the handbook. “The VRLTA provides Virginia’s legal requirements and limitations on these and other rental issues.”

Once a lease has been signed, Wegbreit says the tenant should complete a move-in checklist within five days of moving into the rental. Similarly, a move-out inspection must be completed by the landlord. Taking photographs of each room will aid in recording the conditions of the unit during the terms of the lease. Doing so will make security deposit and damage issues easier to deal with, especially if there is a resulting court case.

“The landlord can delegate completion of the move-in checklist to the tenant but then the landlord can’t quibble later on and say ‘this wasn’t in this condition,’" Wegbreit said. "The landlord delegated that burden to the tenant – the tenants word is basically taken for what it is.”

Wegbreit said the most frequent housing cases he sees involve eviction, nonpayment of rent and repairs.

Eviction

The eviction process takes anywhere from a month and a half to two months if the landlord follows proper protocol. Removal of a tenant from a rental unit requires the strict adherence to five steps by the landlord:

Written notice from the landlord to the tenant: a five day pay-or-quit notice if the issue is non-payment of rent, or a 30 day notice to vacate if it’s any other issue.

The landlord must wait the proper notice period.

The landlord goes to court and files for an unlawful detainer or judgment of possession.

The landlord receives a Writ of Possession, a court order requiring tenant to vacate premises.

A sheriff must serve, or deliver, the tenant with the Writ of Possession and wait a minimum of 72 hours before evicting.

“The tenant doesn’t have to move just because the landlord says so, whether it’s orally or in writing," Wegbreit said. "A lot of tenants don’t understand that."

Only a sheriff or deputy sheriff can physically evict tenants. It is illegal for landlords to do self-help evictions, changing the locks or turning off the utilities, and Wegbreit says there is no exception.

Nonpayment of rent

Tenants have three opportunities to pay rent late and stay in their rental. First, most leases include a grace period in which rent can be paid until a certain time after the first of the month. If the tenant does not pay within that grace period, the landlord can issue a five day pay-or-quit notice.

"If the tenant doesn’t pay within the five day period then the landlord can file the summons for unlawful detainer, an eviction case in general district court," Wegbreit said. "That gives the tenant a third and final opportunity to pay late and stay."

The tenant can pay late and stay if the tenant pays everything owed; the rent, any late fees called for in a written lease, any attorneys fees called for in a written lease (if there is an attorney involved) and court costs. This payment must be made no later than by the first court date. This is called using your "right of redemption," which can only be done once in a 12 month period.

If there is a prior judgment of possession, the landlord is allowed to accept that money and still evict the tenant as long as the landlord accepts each payment with a written notice accepting that payment “with reservation.”

Repairs

Wegbreit says there are three necessary steps a tenant must take when seeking repairs in their rental unit:

Be current on their rent and stay current.

Give written notice to the landlord or make sure someone else has, i.e. building inspector. An oral or verbal notice is not acceptable.

Wait a "reasonable" period of time for the landlord to make the repairs.

"The law does not define what a reasonable period of time is," Wegbreit said. "Typically it’s 21 to 30 days but if it’s an emergency type situation, it would be much faster."

If no action has been taken by the landlord to make necessary repairs, the tenant can take legal action. The written notice as well as their next month's rent can be taken to the general district court and a tenants assertion, or rent escrow court case, can be filed.

"This is the only way tenants can get repairs in Virginia," Wegbreit said. "There is no rent withholding; there is no repair and deduct where you make the repair and send a partial payment along with the receipt for the repair you did."

A tenant can't unreasonably withhold access to the rental unit, just as a landlord may not abuse the right to access. Unless it is an emergency, the landlord must have consent to enter. This means that sporadic "pet checks" and the like, are a violation of landlord-tenant law in Virginia.

"Unless impractical to do so, the landlord shall give the tenant at least 24 hours notice of routine maintenance to be performed that has not been requested by the tenant," states the VRLTA handbook. "If the tenant makes a request for maintenance, the landlord is not required to provide notice to the tenant."

Early termination of a lease

While some leases include an early termination provision, tenants are not guaranteed that right unless they are active-duty military.

Issues with your landlord should be addressed in writing. If a situation comes up, write a polite, detailed letter to your landlord and keep one copy for your records. Documenting any problems can come in handy should you need to seek legal advice.

For more information about landlord-tenant law in Virginia visit the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development website or download a PDF version of the Virginia Residential Landlord and Tenant Act Handbook.

Ok, Richmonders, we've know you've got renting/renter experiences to share.

Phil Barbato, a New Yorker by birth, grew up in Fairfax and moved to Richmond in 1994. You can find his monsters here and at this weekend's Spring Bada-Bing, hosted by the Richmond Craft Mafia. But first, let's see what Phil says about his work and what we can expect from him at Sunday's show.

Have you always been an artist/crafter? Do you remember your first creation? If so, what was it?

I've always made things. I love the process even more than the result. I really like getting my hands dirty if I can. I've been drawing since before I can remember, but I do remember a drawing I did in pre-school. We were making plates. I'm not sure what the process is, but we did drawings in marker and then they somehow got baked into plastic plates. My mom still has the plate. Anyway, it's a drawing of a "Mountain Car" (a mountain with wheels) I remember sitting at the table drawing and I remember that "Mountain Car" made perfect sense to me, but I have no idea what my reasoning was. I was four, I didn't need a reason, right?

When/how did you get started selling your monsters?

I remember selling my first monster to a friend of a friend. I think it was at the Bizarre Market back when it was at the old Chop Suey. It had to be almost ten years ago. She ended up buying a couple more of my early monsters.

What types of materials do you prefer to work with and why? What is that process like for you?

I love fleece because it's stretchy and soft and very forgiving for a sloppy seamster like me. It's also pretty cheap, especially when you buy used. I love the long pile faux furs because they look amazing and come in a wide array of colors. They are a pain in the ass to work with though.

My process is always changing. I used to make drawings and cut them into a pattern and make a monster from that. Then I realized that once it's stuffed it looks nothing like the drawing anymore. So I started just pinning two pieces of fabric together and drawing with the sewing machine. Now I'm making patterns to streamline my process. The baby octopi are the first new monsters where I made a pattern before making a monster and it came out how I expected it to.

Did you start out your business with a specific goal or is it something that has just evolved?

There has never been a specific goal other than to make a living from the things that I make. We're not there yet but we're on our way. My beautiful, awesome, amazing wife, Meghan, manages the business side of things and she's always on the lookout for new opportunities and new product ideas.

Have you ever had a strange or interesting request for a project?

I started doing the Whiskerbears for Whiskerino in 2007 (a bunch of guys grow beards for four months and post pictures of themselves every day) and I did custom orders for some fellow Whiskeroonis. The craziest was a guy who wore a chicken suit in his photos every day and wanted a Whiskerbear in a chicken suit. It was one of my most challenging pieces and is still one of my favorites. Custom orders are difficult for me, but they're always beneficial to my craft. I get to push my skills and develop new techniques in ways I might not think to do otherwise.

Would you say there is a common theme in your work?

I like to make cute things and I like to make people smile. From a strictly graphic sense, you could say the teeth in my monsters is a connecting visual element or gimmick.

Are you a member of the Richmond Craft Mafia? If so, what can you tell me about the organization and your involvement?

Yes, my wife and I just joined the Richmond Craft Mafia and we are very much in love with the lovely ladies of the RCM. I can't tell you anything else about the organization or I'd have to kill you.

Did you become involved with Spring Bada-Bing because of the Richmond Craft Mafia or was it the other way around?

It's been a very long engagement between me and the RCM. My first show with them was the 2008 Holiday Heist, and I've been trying to join ever since. I did The Spring Bada Bing for the first time last year because it was a good, national-level show. The fact that the Richmond Craft Mafia was running it was a bonus.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Free time? HA HA! I play in two local bands, Now Sleepyhead and One Friend. I do freelance web design and illustration to pay the bills. I love to cook and bake bread. I'm an amateur know-it-all about food, wine, beer, and cigars. I love cars, but don't have the money or the time for a project car at the moment, so I just read about other people's projects. We live in a lovely old house, which means we have an endless list of upgrade, repair, and improvement projects. We also have our little puppy, Ella, who demands constant love and affection.

What can people expect to see at Spring Bada-Bing this year in terms of what you're bringing?

We'll have tons of plush from big viking octopi down to Whiskerbears and other little surprises, original paintings and prints, buttons, t-shirts, and a bunch of other stuff.

Thanks to Phil for talking with us! To see a full list of vendors set to appear at Sunday’s Spring Bada-Bing, stop by their website.

Ho there, reader of RSS feeds!

Born in Houston, Texas, Erica Hollen came to Richmond to attend grad school at VCU. She has been selling her line of botanical skin care products, Jackson Sage, since 2006. She's also a vendor at Richmond Craft Mafia's Spring Bada-Bing on Sunday. Let's get to know her a little better.

How did you come up with the name Jackson Sage?

The name comes from several places. Jackson come from two places. First, one of my favorite artist is Jackson Pollack, and his work is rooted in the unconscious and the unknown. Second, my husband and I were married in Jackson, Wyoming. Neither one of us had ever been there so it was leap of faith. Sage also come from two places. First, Sage being a spiritual guide. Second, it be a botanical herb. So when I combine the name Jackson Sage, it reminds me of the spiritual journey.

What types of materials/ingredients do you prefer to work with and why? What is that process like for you?

I like to work with all botanical ingredients. Of course, the most fun I have is making soap since it combines the power of the herbs, oils with color and texture.

Do you create products by request? If so, have you ever had a strange or interesting request?

I do on occasion do custom products but no strange request as of yet.

Did you start out your business with a specific goal or is it something that has just evolved?

I did start out with the goal that I wanted to be able to do this full time. Of course, it did not go at all as I planned. I think it became more more organic and the end goals have changed as well, I think I am thinking in bigger terms now than just being able to do this full time.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Spend time with my husband and Zoo (we have 4 dogs and 4 cats) and garden.

What can people expect to see at Spring Bada-Bing this year in terms of what you're bringing?

Soaps, and skin care. I will have new labels and a few new soap scents.

Thanks to Erika for talking with us! To see a full list of vendors set to appear at Sunday's Spring Bada-Bing, stop by their website.

Ho there, reader of RSS feeds!

April Scott grew up in Lynchburg and came to Richmond in 1991 for college. After moving away for a few years, Scott came back to stay in 1997. Her "delicious handmade baby and toddler dresses" can be found on her Etsy site. Here she tells us a little bit about her creative process and what we can expect from her at this year's Spring Bada-Bing, the much-anticipated craft show produced by the Richmond Craft Mafia.

Have you always been an artist/crafter? Do you remember your first creation? If so, what was it?

Well, I think I've always been crafty. I remember going to a craft store with my mother when I was 6 or 7, and I wanted to get some of those little plastic googly eyes to make pom-pom Tribbles (like on Star Trek.) My mother also taught me to embroider and sew when I was in elementary school.

When/how did you get started?

After my daughter was born, I designed a little sleeveless dress for her, with a tabbed front closure and big buttons. A friend suggested that I stitch up some more dresses so we could share a booth at a craft show. After I sold a few more dresses to friends and acquaintances, I decided to open an Etsy shop, and it just sort of evolved from there.

What types of materials/patterns/shapes/etc. do you prefer to work with and why? What is that process like for you?

I like to use really fun, bold graphic prints and bright colors. I enjoy repurposing fabrics that were never meant to be worn, such as sheets, curtains, dishtowels with odd graphics, as well as using vintage fabrics. Sometimes I'll use 3 or 4 different fabrics in a dress, or I'll make the front and the back of the dress out of completely different fabrics.

Was creating children's clothing a specific goal you set out to achieve or is that something that has just evolved?

It was a goal that has definitely evolved. After a short stint working in an alterations shop, I was convinced that I would be happiest in a job where I could sew and create things. Over the years I had tried making different products such as hats, jewelry, women's clothing, etc., but was never able to achieve any real focus or momentum, partially because I had no idea how to sell my work. Discovering online sales via Etsy was a huge revelation- it gave me easy exposure to a worldwide audience of lovely folks who appreciate and buy handmade goods.

Do you create items by request? If so, have you ever had a strange or interesting request?

I do a fair amount of custom work. Last Halloween a customer asked me to make a child's dress that looked like an Apple iPod. I made the dress front from light grey fabric and the back from black fabric, and the customer stuck the Apple icons on the front. She sent me some pictures, it was a really cute costume!

Would you say there is a common theme in your work?

Clean and simple silhouettes, and fabrics that I love or that make me laugh a little bit.

How did you become involved with Spring Bada-Bing?

This is the third Spring Bada-Bing in which I've been invited to participate, and I am so happy that the Richmond Craft Mafia liked my work enough to invite me back this year!

What do you like to do in your free time?

I have a 4-year-old daughter, so I spend lots of time with her, going to the park, playing make-believe, doing art projects together. She is truly the most delightful little companion! I also have a part-time job, aside from my business, so I stay pretty busy. I like to do the usual stuff - read, cook, eat, take naps in the middle of the day, drink pina-coladas, knit, and sometimes I still even get a chance to sew things for myself!

What items can people expect to see from you at this year's Spring Bada Bing?

I will have the big button dresses and some capes as well as something new I’ve been working on – reversible kimonos.

Thanks to April for talking with us! To see a full list of vendors set to appear at Sunday’s Spring Bada-Bing, stop by their website.

Ho there, reader of RSS feeds!

Nicole Lee, a self-proclaimed "military brat," is originally from Virginia but spent most of her childhood in Los Angeles. She returned Virginia to attend college and decided to stick around after graduating in 2001 with a degree in fashion design. Nicole lives in Richmond, crafting clothing and accessories, which can be found on her website. She'll also be selling her goods at the Richmond Craft Mafia's 2010 Spring Bada-Bing! Here she tells us about how she got started as an artist, her creative process, and what you can expect from her at this year's event.

Have you always been an artist/crafter? Do you remember your first creation? If so, what was it?

I've always been crafty. My first "creation" was a egg carton dragon using the instructions from a craft book my mother gave me, I was probably around 4 [or] 5 years old. It eventually got so long it went the length of the hallway.

When/how did you get started?

In college I majored in fashion design, so I was pretty set in my path.

What types of materials/patterns/shapes/etc. do you prefer to work with and why? What is that process like for you?

I dabble in just about all mediums for fun but I always come back to fabric. I like figuring out different ways to make flat, limp piece of fabric into something snazzy. I think its the pattern making part I enjoy the most, its very much like working a puzzle for me. I usually start out with a couple of yards of cool fabric and brain storm what I can make with it. I make a rough sketch and set out to make the pattern.

Did you set out to create your designs specifically - bags for example - or has your craft evolved with time?

I set out to design clothing, but bags sort of took over, the plan in the near future is to add clothes back in.

Do you create items by request? Any strange requests?

I do sometimes take on custom orders. I haven't had anything strange... yet.

Would you say there is a common theme in your work?

I use mostly natural fabrics in my designs. And I my designs tend to be fairly structured.

Are you a member of the Richmond Craft Mafia? If so, what can you tell me about the organization and your involvement?

I'm one of the founding members of the Richmond Craft Mafia. The RCM is a affiliate group of the Austin Craft Mafia who had the great idea to ban together to network in Austin, TX. For me, It started out with a need to connect with other like minded creative people here in Richmond who had the desire either graduate a hobby to a business to for those who had already started, take it to the next level.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love to read, mostly mysteries and thrillers.

What items can people expect from you at this year's Spring Bada Bing?

More bags in great unusual prints and button rings.

Thanks to Tasha for talking with us! Stay tuned for more profiles on Spring Bada-Bing artists this week.

Tasha McKelvey was born in Michigan and raised in Matthews County, Virginia. She now calls Richmond home and creates her garden-inspired pottery which you can find here and here. She'll also be selling her goods at the Richmond Craft Mafia's 2010 Spring Bada-Bing! Here she tells us about how she got started as an artist, her creative process, and what you can expect from her at this year's event.

Have you always been an artist? Do you remember your first creation? If so, what was it?

I have been an artist as long as I can remember so I really can’t say what my first creation was. I do remember my sister and I having a great time decorating the outside of the huge enclosure my Dad had built to keep our baby chickens in when I was three.

When and how did you get started selling your pottery?

I knew by my second year of college that I wanted to be a working ceramic artist. I started my business the Summer between my junior and senior year. When I graduated in 2000, I had a bit of experience under my belt and was ready to jump in full-time right away.

What types of materials do you prefer to work with and why? What is that process like for you?

Currently, I’m working with high-fire white stoneware and porcelain clays because I like that my glazes come out really bright and vibrant on a light colored clay.

Did you start out your business with a specific goal or is it something that has just evolved?

My main goal has always been to be able make my living from my clay work. I’m the type of person who is always coming up with new ideas. Clay is great outlet for me since it is such a versatile material so I never get bored.

Do you create works by request? If so, have you ever had a strange or interesting request?

I do make custom work, but custom work can be problematic. There’s a kind of Murphy’s Law for my custom work - if something can go wrong, it will go wrong. I almost always have to make two of any special order because of that, which isn’t really ideal. I have had to cut way back on what type of special orders I will take - it has to be very inline with my other work. I guess the strangest thing I have made are pet urns, but I have made urns for people as well, including my Grandma’s, which was very special for me.

Would you say there is a common theme in your work?

Yep, everything I’ve made for the past several years is woodland and garden inspired - birds, squirrels, hedgehogs, mushrooms, flowers, oak and ginkgo leaves.

Are you a member of the Richmond Craft Mafia? If so, what can you tell me about the organization and your involvement?

I have been a member of the Richmond Craft Mafia for about four years now. The Richmond Craft Mafia is based on the original Craft Mafia in Austin, Texas. We are basically a craft-business networking group, but we are also pretty well-known in Richmond for the two indie craft shows we put on - Spring Bada-Bing and Handmade Holiday. I’m point-person for Handmade Holiday, putting on a craft show is a lot of work, but it has taught me so much!

Did you become involved with Spring Bada-Bing because of the Richmond Craft Mafia or was it the other way around?

Actually I was volunteer at the first Spring Bada-Bing, not too long after I moved to Richmond. Several of the Craft Mafia members encouraged me to apply to join the group that day. I was lucky enough to be invited to join a few months later.

What do you like to do in your free time?

My husband and I bought our first home last Spring (we moved in the day before last year’s Spring Bada-Bing). I spend quite a bit of my free time working on home improvements and gardening. The house is also located a few blocks from the James River, so we also spend lots of time hiking and walking our Beagle.

What can people expect to see at Spring Bada-Bing this year in terms of what you're bringing?

I will have my bird pottery ans my line of ceramic jewelry, as well as lots of new bits like my woodgrain series of platters and small trays.

Thanks to Tasha for talking with us! Stay tuned for more profiles on Spring Bada-Bing artists this week. To see a full list of vendors set to appear at Spring Bada-Bing, stop by their website.

(The featured image comes from Tasha's pottery collection on her website, tashamck.com.)

Ho there, reader of RSS feeds!

Originally from Lynchburg, Erica Vess of Bee's Knees Studio moved to Richmond in 1997 to attend VCU's fine arts painting and printmaking program. You can find her paintings and prints on her website and her Etsy shop. She will also be selling her wares at this year's Spring Bada-Bing! Here she tells about her history as an artist, how she got involved with the Richmond Craft Mafia, and what can expect from her at this year's event.

Have you always been an artist? Do you remember your first painting?

I have been drawing since I could hold a crayon. My uncle Charles is actually a professional illustrator, so from a very young age I knew it was possible to make a living as an artist.
The oldest drawing of mine that I still have is a picture of two bunnies that I drew when I was five years old. My mom kept that one because she was so amazed that they were correctly placed in front of the horizon line.

When/how did Bee's Knees Studio get started?

Bee's Knees Studio evolved kind of organically, really: I didn't wake up one day and say "Today I will start a business." I guess it started with selling a motley assortment of paintings, jewelry, and other crafts at the Bizarre Market in 2006. I quickly realized that what people really seemed to be interested in were my paintings, so I gradually got rid of all the other stuff and focused entirely on my artwork.

How did you come up with the name?

I'm embarrassed to admit it, but it was out of a Smiths song! I bought my domain name back in college and I was trying to be cool. It's funny, I think my current work fits so much better than when I started using the name for my fine art work back in 2000!

What types of materials/paints/etc. do you prefer to work with and why? What is that process like for you?

I mostly use acrylic paint, because I love the flat, graphic quality of it. The image of a painting in most people's minds is a lot of brushstrokes and big blobs of paint, but I really work to achieve a nice smooth surface. I think the simplicity of my subject matter demands smooth, precise painting. I can't count how many times people ask me if my paintings are screen prints!

Your paintings can be enjoyed by both adults and children - was that a specific goal you set out to achieve or is that something that has just evolved?

That was definitely something that evolved. If you had told me 10 years ago that I would be doing children's art, I would have laughed at you.

Do you create works by request? If so, have you ever had a strange or interesting request?

I really try and steer clear of custom work because people have an image in their mind already and it's so hard to give them what they want. I will occasionally paint dog portraits when business is slow. I really, REALLY can't draw people so after a disastrous portrait of a customer's wife and their dogs in a car, I'm now really firm about painting only the dog!

Would you say there is a common theme in your work?

My common theme is cute! I aim for world domination through cuteness. Seriously though, I love bright colors and I am never happier than when I can create just the right cute blobby animal, with just the perfect sad expression.

You are a member of the Richmond Craft Mafia. What can you tell me about the organization and your involvement?

The Richmond Craft Mafia is a small, tightly-knit group of crafty business people who I am happy to count among my best friends. I don't know where I would be without these guys. I have come such a long way since I joined 3 years ago.

Basically, our organization exists to do two things: 1) To promote each others businesses. We do this through shared advertising, group trunk shows, shared group booths at out-of-town craft shows, etc. 2) To promote other independent/alternative craft businesses in general and to create an environment where indie craft businesses can thrive. We do this through organizing craft shows like Spring Bada-Bing and Handmade Holiday. Most typical craft shows are financially out of reach for many aspiring crafters and are frankly not the best venue for edgy, unusual or fashion-forward work. Through our shows, we connect small indie craft businesses with customers who appreciate stylish, offbeat handmade goods.

I am currently the RCM co-chairperson, a job title shared, thankfully, with the amazing organizational superwoman otherwise known as Tasha McKelvey. She is the point person for our holiday craft show, and I am the lead for Spring Bada-Bing. I also designed the graphics for Spring Bada-Bing. But we don't do it all by ourselves -- everybody in the group has an official role that they fulfill and special skills that they bring to the group.

Did you become involved with Spring Bada-Bing because of the Richmond Craft Mafia or was it the other way around?

I was a vendor in the 2007 Spring Bada-Bing and I was approached by Dawn Anderson, one of the founding members of the Richmond Craft Mafia. And she made me an offer I couldn't refuse...ok I'm kidding. She asked me to apply to be in the group; I did and was accepted and, bada-boom, here I am. When Dawn retired from the group last year, fellow RCM member Tasha McKelvey and I ended up taking on a lot of her leadership responsibilities. We all owe a lot to Dawn; there wouldn't be a Richmond Craft Mafia without her.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Free time? I would love to have some free time, because right now I work a full time day job, do my Bee's Knees Studio artwork at home after work, and am putting every other second of the day into making sure that Spring Bada-Bing is the best show it can be. I am exhausted! When it's not Spring Bada-Bing crunch time, my husband and I take ballroom dance lessons, which is goofy but fun. I'm a pretty avid reader, and I also love watching stodgy BBC dramas.

What can people expect from Bee's Knees Studio at this year's Spring Bada-Bing?

I've started a second Etsy shop for a new branch of my work and I hope to debut some of it at Spring Bada-Bing. I recently invested in a nice wide-format printer and am busy making all sorts of new cute art prints, as well as stationery, paper dolls and models. But I'm only one of 65 vendors who will be strutting their stuff at Spring Bada-Bing.

Thanks to Erica for talking with us! Stay tuned for more profiles on Spring Bada-Bing artists this week. To see a full list of vendors set to appear at Spring Bada-Bing, stop by their website.

(The image featured comes from Erica's circus train series available on her website, beeskneesstudio.com.)

Ho there, reader of RSS feeds!

On April 18, local and regional artists will converge on Richmond for the fifth-annual Spring Bada-Bing: The BOSS of All Craft Shows. The event, organized by the Richmond Craft Mafia, will be held at Plant Zero from 11am to 4pm.

"There were a record 163 applications for Spring Bada-Bing this year and the show has been carefully curated to ensure a vibrant and exciting mix of the very best that indie craft has to offer," stated Erica Vess, of Bee's Knees Studio and co-chairperson of Richmond Craft Mafia.

The largest independent craft show in Virginia, this year's Spring Bada-Bing will host 65 artists.

“Independent artists and designers from around the country will be in attendance, offering handcrafted wares and helping to educate shoppers about a movement known in crafty circles as the Do It Yourself, or DIY, movement,” stated the Spring Bada-Bing press release. “Fueled by the internet, the DIY movement is at the backbone of a growing craft culture, seeking to prove to Americans that high quality, everyday items are easily available at places other than the mall.”

The Richmond Craft Mafia is a local craft collective consisting of 10 local artists who are "rubbin' out the mass produced." The first Craft Mafia began in Austin, Texas in 2003 and has since spread to cities across the country.

Richmond members include:

Janet Lundy (Monkey Dog Studio)

Erica Vess (Bee's Knees Studio)

Nicole Lee (Nicole Lee Designs)

Erika Hollen (Jackson Sage)

Tasha McKelvey (Pottery by Tasha McKelvey)

Maryellen Kim (Twist Style)

Adrien Hamilton and Kate Poroszok (Keen Designs)

Crystal Robinson (Crystal J Silk)

Phil Barbato (Phil Barbato)

Amy George (Modern Atelier)

"People often have the misconception that we are some sort of social club for craft enthusiasts or that we want to teach people how to craft," Vess stated. "We are very serious about our businesses and many of our members make their living with their craft [and] putting on a show like Spring Bada-Bing takes a great deal of time and effort, all of it unpaid volunteer work on the part of our members."

Craft Mafia members as well as 55 other artists will be selling their unique merchandise at Plant Zero, located at 0 East 4th St. in Manchester's Art District. Creations from the invited designers range from hand-crafted jewelry and accessories to home decor and children's clothing.

Caroline Gibson, of Page-Ricaud Public Relations which is a sponsor of the event, said over 1,200 attendees are expected.

“It’s great to see these creative minds breaking the mold of the everyday - the mass produced and the mundane - creating something with an edge and a bit of magic,” said Gibson.

For a complete list of vendors and more information, check out the websites for Spring Bada-Bing and the Richmond Craft Mafia.

Stay tuned this week for profiles on some of the Richmond artists who will be at the show!

Ho there, reader of RSS feeds!

Beginning April 12, Ukrop’s Super Markets around Richmond will make their transition into MARTIN'S.

In a press release today, MARTIN'S announced their plans to introduce lower prices store-wide as well as their intention to continue gas pump rewards.

“MARTIN’S has a tradition of being a low price leader and offering the most competitive prices to our customers for the highest quality products,” said Jim Scanlon, regional vice president in the press release. “This is not a gimmick and it is not temporary; it is the new price reality at MARTIN’S.”

Customers will be able to take advantage of these prices by applying for a MARTIN'S BONUSCARD. Just like the Ukrop’s Value Card, obtaining a BONUSCARD is free and can be applied for right in the store.

Ukrop’s customers with fuelperks! will still have an opportunity to use their accumulated fuelperks! until the change-over is complete in mid-May. Both the Ukrop’s Value Card and MARTIN'S BONUSCARD can be used until that time.

After the change-over is complete, customers can “spend” their earned MARTIN'S gas savings at 37 participating Uppy’s locations around Richmond and Williamsburg.

“In addition, customers will no longer need to spend at least $50 in one transaction to begin earning discounts. For every $100 accumulated at MARTIN’S using a BONUSCARD, customers will receive ten cents off per gallon of gas the next time they fill up at participating Uppy’s BP and Exxon stations.”

MARTIN'S will also offer Double Coupons every day. Visit the MARTIN'S website for online coupons, recipes, weekly circulars and more.

Ho there, reader of RSS feeds!

The folks at Stuff Inc. are working to keep RVA a creative, environmentally responsible city. Since July of 2008, the all volunteer-run organization has provided the community with a variety of art education workshops.

Sarah Branigan, Stuff program director, said the non-profit also strives to provide creative reuse materials to help eliminate waste generated by project leftovers. The eventual goal, according to Branigan, is to have a warehouse or retail space where donations of materials that can be used in a creative way will be accepted and housed.

“It will be a program space as well as a retail space for people to come and pick out all sorts of interesting materials for projects they have,” Branigan said. “Artists, students, teachers - anyone who has a project in mind that doesn’t want to go out and buy new materials can come in and find all sorts of goodies.”

According to their website, “As the idea turned into a reality, the Stuff founders and committed volunteers worked vigorously over the summer of '08 to create a business plan and vision cast with local artists and educators for innovative and creative programming."

So far, Stuff has been able to operate on building partnerships with local organizations through volunteers as well as material and monetary donations. Branigan said applying for grants is another way organizers hope to continue its growth. In the past, Stuff has partnered with local businesses such as: Hands on Greater Richmond, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, VCU Department of Art Education, and many more.

Branigan, who is an instructor in the Department of Art Education at VCU, said she hopes the space will eventually offer after-school programs for children and their families.

Stuff has several upcoming workshops this spring, including Missing Monsters with Deanna Miller at the end of March and Save the Trash with Carter Anderson in April.

“The last one we have planned for Spring is a soap making workshop using different natural materials and that is with Michael Wilson,” Branigan said. “I think we’re going to do that out at Tuckahoe Plantation and do a farm chore out there as well.”

Branigan said the specific dates for each workshop are still being nailed down, so check the Stuff Inc. website for more details on all upcoming events.

(Images courtesy of richmondstuff.org.

Richmonders looking to celebrate all things Irish at the 25th Annual Church Hill Irish Festival, can keep their cars parked safely at home.

In an effort to help keep our roads a little safer this St. Patty’s Day, the To The Bottom and Back Bus will be available all weekend, catering specifically to fest-goers.

“We will be running a bus for the Church Hill Irish Fest from their designated parking lot (at 17th and Broad) to the festival at 25th and Broad all day Saturday 11-7, and Sunday 11-6 – it will be free and run continuously,” stated Sandy Appelman, co-partner of the bus, in an email. “We will also be running a bus through our normal route during the day Saturday and Sunday so people do not have to drive to the festival at all.”

Founded in 2009 by Jim Porter, the bus operates off of donations from the community. The service seeks to provide a free, safe and convenient way for RVA residents to travel around town.

“Having been in car accidents in '98 and '07, I understand the difficulties and struggles that friends and loved ones have to deal with,” stated Porter on his website. “As a victim, I spent a lot of time thinking... ‘what if? There has to be a better way!’ So with that in mind, I started an alternative to drinking and driving... take the free ride!”

The bus serves Carytown, the Fan, Shockoe Slip and Shockoe Bottom, until 3am, Thursday through Saturday. GRTC buses only run until 1am, but the “To The Bottom and Back” bus is still running when most bars and clubs close.

“It's all about moving people around, taking advantages of the benefits of mass transit, and enhancing the city’s transportation system by filling in where it is needed,” Appelman stated. “At the same time, we want to lower the quantity of drinking and driving incidents by offering alternatives to those who need it, when they need it.”

Visit the To The Bottom and Back website for more details on its routes, schedules, and how you can support their efforts.

For many, March 17 is a day filled with good beer, great friends, and clover-clad attire. This year, why not let your St. Patrick's Day celebration include making eco-friendly choices that can leave you with a clean (green) conscience, too?

Stephanie Ackermann, owner of Ecologic, came up with five great tips to help RVA get a little greener. Located at 1606 W. Main Street, Ecologic offers a variety of ‘green’ resources ranging from flooring materials to locally made apparel. Check out their website for store hours and more details.

1. Hit The Bar

Something as simple as trading in your bottles of liquid body wash for bar soap can have an effect on the earth and your wallet. Less packaging, more convenience, and larger variety all make bar soap a great way to get clean and stay green.

"You’ll also be conserving water - the primary ingredient in body washes - and money since bar soaps typically cost less than bottled body washes - we love locally owned Jackson Sage’s all natural handmade soaps," Ackermann said.

2. Talk Trash

Give used items a second life. With just a little creativity you can take one man's trash and turn it into your very own treasure. Whatever you have, chances are there is a great way to re-purpose it. Check out EcoSalon for ideas.

"Up-cycling (the process of converting an existing product into a new product or one of better quality) is one of the hottest green trends right now and we’re all for it," Ackermann said. "Shop RVA’s many thrift stores or even Craigslist and find that perfect piece that just needs a new coat of eco-friendly paint or stain."

3. Make Your Own

"Compost helps soil retain water, reducing the need to water and will also eliminate the need for chemical fertilizers," Ackermann said. "Recycled plastic composting bins and tumblers make the process easy and less messy."

Composting household waste can be an overwhelming concept for some. Tips on how to get started, where to store your compost and what exactly can be composted are addressed by numerous websites. Visit VegWeb for a great introduction to composting.

4. Know Your Grower

RVA has a number of local growers and farmers markets that provide a variety of fresh foods. Supporting Richmond's local food economy benefits not just the growers, but the community as a whole.

"By joining a farm co-op you can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support your local economy all while enjoying the freshest foods possible," Ackermann said. "We’re partial to Fall Line Farms – Richmond’s online farm to family co-op that consists of more than 40 Virginia farmers and other small businesses all committed to sustainability."

5. Rethink, Reuse, Remodel

According to American Farmland Trust, we lose over a million acres of farmland in the U.S. alone. "More than 75% of America's fruit, vegetables and dairy products are produced on urban-edge farms that are threatened by sprawling development," stated the website.

These days, there are so many options available for remodeling your home in a way that has less impact on the environment. The Earth is not likely to produce more land, so maintaining what we have is of utmost importance. Ackermann says remodeling your home is more eco-friendly than building a new one.

"You will use fewer resources, generate less construction waste and spend less money compared to building a new 'green' home. More importantly, when you remodel you preserve one of our most precious resources: undeveloped land," Ackermann explained.

"Going green" is a clever title for making choices that can have long-term, positive effects both locally and globally. Whether by simply thinking in a different way about the future of a household item or retro-fitting everything you own with solar panels, becoming more aware of the footprints you leave behind is the first step to greening our planet.

Have a tip for bringing a little more green to RVA? Let us know about your eco-friendly efforts.

Ho there, reader of RSS feeds! Do you ever want to support RVANews in a real and tangible way?

Mac McCormack has been serving up spirits, brews, and punk-rock atmosphere in his Shockoe Bottom bar, McCormack’s Irish Pub, since 1999.

Starting today (hopefully), RVA residents can partake in Mac’s newest endeavor: family-friendly restaurant meets edgy, cool bar.

Located at 204 N. Robinson Street, former home of Sushi Ninja, McCormack’s Whisky Grill & Smokehouse is hard to miss. With its copper-topped roof and hand-painted sign, this new piece of Fan District charm has a lot to offer.

“I wanted to build a place true to who I am and what people think of as ‘my place,’ but with a more diverse crowd,” Mac said. “It’s a restaurant where Elvis and The Cramps will be playing, for example, but also a place where you can bring your children.”

Mac said the new place was intentionally created with a different focus than the pub. The menu is geared toward southern comfort foods, which include barbecue, a variety of entrees and sandwiches, decadent desserts, and even funnel cake.

“Our focus is really on the food and the bar side is a secondary thing,” he said. “We have two ovens and two fryers, so we are also a ‘vegetarian-friendly meat restaurant’."

Images of John Wayne, Mae West, and Elvis Presley – to name a few – add to the decor. Whiskey barrel tops are displayed throughout as well as signed music memorabilia. The walls are covered in rough hewn cedar and accents of slate and granite tile-work abound. Every edge seems to be kissed with steel detailing, including the floor-to-ceiling liquor shelf.

“It has 20 shelves total, each shelf is 60 inches long – all staggered,” Mac said. “I wanted to make it so people can see everything – the idea was to have at least 1,000 bottles but it can probably hold 1,400.”

And if sheer size alone doesn’t impress – the attached rolling library-style ladder should do the trick. Various whiskeys and hundreds of other liquor varieties will eventually call Mac's epic rack home.

Truly a do-it-yourself project, the restaurant makeover consisted of using several recycled and re-purposed materials. Mac said he did much of the work himself with the help of friends like Garnett Ryland, Patrick Hooker, and Thor Levesque (who is also the chef).

Mac said he has many hopes for the future of McCormack’s Whisky Grill & Smokehouse including a variety of homemade jerkies, real breakfast foods, and coffee served every morning. Mac said he also plans to host “School Nights” on Tuesdays to educate patrons about premium liquors.

Ho there, reader of RSS feeds!

In 2009, both USA Today and the New York Times mentioned the rising rates of readership and sales in the genre of Romance Fiction.

Chalk it up to the economic crises and the fact that losing yourself in a good, sexy book is way better than worrying about retirement. Or, perhaps this is a result of a shift in societal norms. Perhaps now, more than ever, women can outwardly express not only femininity and intelligence but confidence and sexuality as well.

Harlequin Enterprises Limited, one of the world's largest romance novel publishers in the world, has been in the business of romance for 60 years.

"Since its inception, Harlequin has sold approximately 5.8 billion books," stated the website.

And that's just one publisher - there are countless others these days publishing hundreds of new writers.

Of course traditional romance writers like Nora Roberts and Danielle Steel have been around writing best-selling romance novels since the early 1980s. But there is a new front. Writers Eloisa James (aka Mary Bly) and Julia Quinn, both ivy league educated, are cranking out best-selling titles like The Viscount Who Loved Me and Desperate Duchesses.

"...sometimes the bad news can be overwhelming. And you wonder how many smiles, hugs, and blooming flowers it's going to take to make it all better. And that, I think, is the real reason I write (and read) romance novels. Because at the end of the day (or at least at the end of the book), everyone is happy," stated Quinn on her website.

In response to this resurgence of romance fiction, here are just four of the erotic gems out there for the taking.

Dirty Sexy Knitting
By Christie Ridgway
Total Pages: 299
Pages til nookie begins: 80

Dirty Sexy Knitting is the last book in a three-part series which includes How to Knit a Wild Bikini and Unravel Me. Who wouldn't want to be caught reading these titles in public places? If you're into naughty knitting, why not shout it from the rooftops? The main character, Cassandra Riley, owns a knitting shop (surprise, surprise) in Malibu, California cleverly called "Malibu & Ewe." Cassandra has the terrible misfortune of falling in love with a man who is all wrong for her, Gabe Kincaid. He is broken, a mere shell of a man, coping with the loss of his wife and daughter who died in a tragic accident. He is so overcome with depression that, despite his wealth, he can only drink copious amounts of alcohol and rely on Cassandra to clean up his messes. Even if that means Cassandra, or Froot Loop as he so lovingly refers to her, responding to late-night calls to retrieve ol' Gabe off some barroom floor. The plot lines include a famous plastic surgeon/sperm donor father and yes, even murderous rage. If you like virginal thirty-year-old women who love cats, dysfunctional men and knitting, then this book is for you.

"She licked her lips, trembling as he continued to look at her. It was like there was a beast under her skin, a hot, sexy, demanding beast that didn't remember Gabe had been kicked out of her life. Touch me, damn you, it wanted to shout at him."

Bitten
By Kelley Armstrong
Total Pages: 436
Pages til nookie begins: 103

Bitten is more than just a love story with heaving chests, flowing locks and urgent caressing. It's a turgid tale of a female werewolf -- rather, the only female werewolf known in existence... at least in the Toronto and upstate New York area. This she-wolf is called Elena Michaels and she has spent years desperately seeking a normal 'human' life. She has a boyfriend, Philip, and a they live happily together in Toronto. Well, as happily as one can live when fighting back constant urges to shift into a giant dog and chase down prey. One day, she is contacted by her old pack - a bunch of werewolf men from her complex past - and things really get interesting. Elena is no push-over, or so she keeps saying, but ends up doing pretty much whatever is required to restore peace in a chaotic werewolf-y world. If you enjoy a kick-ass female character and often far-fetched (pun intended) story plots - including violence and some gore - then check this book out. Armstrong goes into much detail describing the 'turning' from wolf to human - including 'dinner breath.'

"He kissed me. I could feel the heat from his body, so familiar I could drown in it. The rich scent of him wafted through my brain, as intoxicating as peyote smoke. I felt myself succumbing to the smell..."

One Reckless Summer
By Toni Blake
Total Pages: 370
Pages til nookie begins: 19

By far the fastest moving, One Reckless Summer gets straight to the point. As the title might imply, the pages of this book tell the story of one woman's reckless abandon during a transitional time in her otherwise wholesome life. Jenny Tolliver found out her husband, Terrence is cheating on her with a 21 year-old student teacher. What a bastard! She gave up her her dreams of working for NASA to marry him when they were just kids. How could he have the nerve to say she is the "twenty-first century June Cleaver" and "he desires a bad girl"? The only thing left for Jenny to do: pack up her telescope and go back to Destiny, Ohio. As the Police Chief's daughter, Jenny was always well-behaved, but now she is 31 and ready to take some chances - especially with Mick Brody. Mick is dangerous and Jenny is more than willing to take a ride in his rowboat.

"This was not about kissing - this was about need, and hunger, and darkness. This was hard sex, in the woods. This was Mick Brody."

Beyond Heaving Bosoms: The Smart Bitches' Guide to Romance Novels
By Sarah Wendell and Candy Tan
Total Pages: 284
No nookie (womp, womp, womp)

Beyond Heaving Bosoms gives the reader an incredibly witty introduction into the Romance genre. Wendell and Tan break down every aspect of the genre including: the history and future of romance fiction, different sub-genres, the romance heroine and hero, typical plot devices and of course, sex. The presence of rape in early romance novels is even discussed in great detail - which touches on many historical accuracies (women as property) of non-consensual sex. Every chapter of this book is smart, to put it simply, and will likely elicit deep thoughts. Even if you hate romance novels, read this book.

"No, no, don't hide your romance novel. You don't have to wrap it in a quilted cover or slide it in between the pages of The New Yorker. We know you're smart. We also know you like romance novels...There are plenty of articles and books that dismiss the genre, and some excellent academic examinations that subject the genre to a long over-due analysis. Us? We're here to throw a party for the genre..."

Really, in the end, we are all searching for the same thing: a happy ending. Many have and will continue to argue that reading romance novels is a slap in the face of feminism. It is equally arguable that today's novels highlight strong women who have the power to overcome life's tribulations without the help of a man unless she so chooses. The truth about Romance Fiction is that in many ways, the books written within the genre act as a sort of window into our social history - challenging, or at times reinforcing, ideas of love, sex and gender. What's important is the fact that reading great books, whatever the genre, can provide a bit of escapism in our sometimes uninteresting lives. Romance Fiction does this, and it does it well. And what's wrong with a little hanky-panky between the covers? (book covers, that is.)

Ho there, reader of RSS feeds!

The second annual Heart of Winter Fest is set to bring two days of DIY metal to the RVA music scene.

Armed with metal bands from all over the East Coast, the fest line-up reflects both the regional and local metal scenes.

Event creators, Greg ‘Elway’ Ernst and Drew Goldi said this year’s fest will be held at Alley Katz and separated into two big shows (January 29 and 30). Last year, Heart of Winter Fest consisted of three shows held at three different venues; Nara Sushi, Alley Katz, and Rocks.

“We like Alley Katz - it's a good spot with regards to size and sound,” Ernst stated in an email. “Chris G. and the people there were very cool to us last year, so we knew we'd be back.”

Ernst and Goldi have built strong ties in the metal scene over their years playing music. They are founders of Richmond black metal band Bastard Sapling, which is booked for the fest as well.

Many of those connections are the lifeline Ernst said continues to keep the Richmond music scene thriving and consequently has played an integral part of the festivals creation.

“What I love about Richmond is the people who are in bands go to see and support other bands,”Ernst said. “I think everybody is one within that community.”

450 people turned-out for the inaugural Heart of Winter Fest and Ernst said he hopes this year will be no different.

“Of course, I want it to be packed and successful - I think it should be,” Ernst stated. “I know that Drew and I with help of others like Mike Paparo (Inter Arma and Bastard Sapling) have worked hard putting this together.”

Here is the band line-up, listed first to last, for Friday and Saturday:

Friday, January 29, 2010

Throne Of Carrion (Richmond, VA)

Windhand (Richmond, VA)

Hot Graves (Gainesville, FL)

Castevet (New York, NY)

Battlemaster (Richmond, VA)

Shadow Of The Destroyer (Asheville, NC)

Woe (Philadelphia, PA)

Doors open at 6:30pm, show starts at 7pm
Tickets are $12

Saturday, January 30, 2010

Earthling (Harrisonburg, VA)

Mutilation Rites (New York, NY)

Neckbrace (Richmond, VA)

Benighted In Sodom (Ft.

Since the 1970s, 929 W. Grace Street has been an important part of the RVA music scene. Twisters, the Nanci Raygun and Bagel Czar (just to name a few) have all been part of bringing punk, hardcore and metal shows to the location over the years.

In December, Strange Matter became the newest edition to a long list of businesses that have called the site home and is now open for business.

Retro arcade games, a full restaurant menu, and DIY atmosphere are all the stuff of Strange Matter.

Co-owners Jennifer Ward, Bobby Pembleton and John Downing have not made any structural changes to the building but have been working on fixing it up. With the help of local artist Marshall Higgins and other friends, the owners have given the interior and exterior a face-lift.

Ward said having shows will hopefully occur in the not too distant future. But for now, plans are delayed because of city ordinance issues.

“In the interim between the Raygun and [Strange Matter], the fire code changed due to the Great White debacle in New Hampshire where patrons died when pyrotechnics set a venue on fire,” Ward stated in an email. “We either have to overhaul the building with a sprinkler system or we have to accept a capacity so low that it's counter-intuitive for promoters' jobs - as in, hey, promote the hell out of this show, but not too hard, because we can only fit this many on our dance floor.”

Although Strange Matter’s nightclub zoning permit, which would allow them to put on shows, is still pending, Ward said management is staying positive. She said with luck, Strange Matter will be able to install a sprinkler system during the summer which will then facilitate a nightclub permit.

In the mean time, she said the management is looking to host creative community events including film screenings and workshops. They have also applied for a beer and wine license from Alcohol Beverage Control.

The City of Richmond Department of Community Development website states “to promote orderly development, every parcel within the City has a zoning designation that governs its use.”

Zoning approvals, building permits, occupancy permits, health permits, ABC permits, and sign permits must be obtained to even receive a business license. All of the above depend on the type of business and can be complicated for inexperienced entrepreneurs.

“Everyone has been really supportive so far. I was kind of afraid that if we opened without shows, the community would lose faith in us,” Ward stated. “Instead, they just commiserate and wish us luck.”

As far as what arcade games they have available, here's what you can now play at Strange Matter for just 25 cents a pop:

Altered Beast

Bad Dudes vs. Dragon Ninja

Battle Shark

Golden Axe

Lethal Enforcers

Mario Bros.

Mortal Kombat 2

Ninja Gaiden

Smash TV

Space Invaders

Street Fighter II

WWF Superstars

You can take a look at their menu here and here.

Despite a struggling economy, families in need of a little Christmas magic this season won’t be left out in the cold. In this season of giving, the people of Richmond have gone above and beyond to help those who need it most.

The support of several local businesses and thousands of donations from community members are helping the The Salvation Army Richmond Area Command make Christmas a reality.

According to a recent Salvation Army press release, “children will be served through one or more of The Salvation Army’s Christmas Assistance Programs: The Salvation Army/NBC 12 Army Angel Tree, The Times-Dispatch Christmas Mother Fund, FOX Holiday Socks, Toys for Tots, Puritan Cleaners Coats for Kids [and] ESPN Radio 950’s Holiday Cheer and Gear.”

Capt. David Worthy of The Salvation Army Richmond Area Command said Richmonders have been phenomenally supportive of the Christmas assistance program; as a result, thousands will benefit.

“There are somewhere between seven and eight thousand children we are assisting through our regular Angel Tree Program - and that does not take into account the additional folks that we’ve helped through the Christmas Mother Program,” David said. “We are anticipating somewhere in the neighborhood of 10,000 children.”

Those who reached out to the Salvation Army Christmas Assistance Programs this year will have all week to pick up their items at the Christmas Center, located in the former Dillard's department store in Chesterfield Towne Center.

“This is by far the most well-suited facility we have ever used,” David said. “We indeed are grateful for Chesterfield Towne Center for making this facility available at no cost to the Salvation Army.”

The 110,000 square foot Christmas Center is brimming with donated gifts, coats, bikes and stuffed stockings. Visitors will also have an opportunity to "shop" in an area of freebie items provided by Dollar Tree.

Capt. Dawn Worthy (David’s wife and fellow Salvation Army commander) said 13,000 coats were received through the Puritan Cleaner’s Coats for Kids Drive.

“Technically, if all the sizes fit we should have plenty of coats for every single person that comes through here,” Dawn said.

The Christmas Center opened yesterday and will remain open for registered families until Saturday.

“There is no greater delight than knowing that we are impacting the lives of families and children in this area,” David said.

Visit the Salvation Army Richmond Area Command website for more information about the Christmas Assistance Program and sponsors.

Puritan Cleaners Operations Manager Norman Way (foreground, red tie) leads a group of volunteers in prayer, celebrating the opening day of the Christmas Center.

A press release from the Office of the Governor addressing the start of the statewide smoking ban came out this morning.

This monumental public health measure came about with bipartisan support from the General Assembly and with the support of the people of Virginia, the vast majority of whom want to enjoy dining out in a smoke-free environment. We applaud these restaurants for recognizing that they can help enhance the high quality of life Virginians enjoy by protecting restaurant patrons and employees from the serious health risks of secondhand smoke.

Beginning today, Virginia restaurants open to the public will no longer permit smoking outside of special smoking areas.

For a list of restaurants providing smoking accommodations, visit our Eats directory

Ho there, reader of RSS feeds!

A group of 15 VCU graphic design students are working together to raise awareness about local foods in Virginia. Project Winterfood, occurring on December 2, will benefit the Central Virginia Foodbank and Gallery5.

“Project Winterfood is reaching out to everyone – those who already enjoy farm fresh foods and those who have heard the phrase ‘eating locally’ without getting a chance to learn what it’s really all about,” according to a press release.

Led by instructor and socially conscious designer Noah Scalin, the students are part of a service-learning course called Design Rebels combining graphic design and community activism.

The class is broken into two parts and incorporates the impact of design as well as Scalin’s views on using the profession to do good. Scalin said he created the class from scratch in 2003 to address a need he saw at VCU.

Scalin's Design Rebels

“I noticed that no one was talking about the practical effects that design had on the world and the power these students were going to yield as graphic designers,” Scalin said.

The student organizers of the event said it will unite art, food, and music to generate awareness about locally grown food in the community.

“It’s going to be very laid back and fun - it’s all really about the people who come,” said Christina Gleixner, student and event co-organizer. “It’s a social event, an art gallery, and hopefully something that is going to connect people in our community to local food options.”

Several local businesses are involved in bringing this event to fruition. Visitors can expect tasting booths and fair-trade coffee and tea from Rostov’s Coffee and Tea. Dominion Harvest and the Farm to Family Veggie Bus, two organizations that deliver locally grown foods around Richmond, will also be at the event.

“Buying from locally sustainable farms means the food is being grown naturally,” said Howard Brown, owner of Dominion Harvest. “It 100 percent supports local farmers and the local economy.”

The theme for Project Winterfood is inspired by seasonal foods available in Virginia, including spinach, sweet potatoes and apples. Each piece of art in the exhibition, ranging from sculpture and paintings to sound, are created by the students as well as some members of the community.

“We are all in the class as designers who are interested in doing something good - to make a positive change,” Gleixner said.

Here is a full list of Richmond area businesses who partnered up with Project Winterfood:

Farm to Family (Veggie Bus)

Dominion Harvest

Gallery 5

Savor Cafe

Ipanema Cafe

Rostov's Coffee & Tea

Ellwood Thompson's Natural Market

Ukrop's Supermarket

Byrd House Market

Chop Suey Books

Save Our Food

BW Wilson Paper Co.

Biz Port

Project Winterfood will take place on Wednesday, December 2 from 7pm to 10pm at 1509 W.
