THEFT OF MOTOR VEHICLE 8/30/10–8/31/10 5:00 p.m. – 4:30 a.m. – 2100 block of Fairmount Avenue – An unknown person(s) entered the unlocked vehicle and stole two child booster seats.

Shooting and an arrest on Williamsburg Road

A man in his late 20s was shot in the leg at a residence in the 1400 block of Williamsburg Road at around 11PM on Friday night as the result of a domestic dispute. He was taken to VCU Medical Center with a non-life threatening injury. Kevin Sheldon Samuels, 36, of the 1400 block of Williamsburg Road was arrested soon after and charged with aggravated assault. The weapon used in the shooting was found in the backyard of a neighboring residence.

Garber Street homicide

The Richmond Police Department is investigating the fatal shooting of a man in the 1300 block of Garber Street. Around 4 a.m. a citizen saw a man lying in the front yard of a residence and called Richmond Police. Officers arrived and found the man unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene, the victim of an apparent gunshot wound.

This is the 10th killing in the East End this year, the 2nd in the Fulton area (previously), and the 26th for the city of Richmond in 2010.

Anyone with information regarding this homicide is asked to call Detective Jeff Crewell at 201-3829 or Detective Mark Williams at 513-0955. Callers who do not want to be identified may call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.

East End Transformation Charrette follow-up meeting

Councilwoman Newbille will hold a meeting in Richmond’s East End 7th District to discuss and review the preliminary draft report that was written to encompass the results of the seven-day Richmond Nine Mile Road/25th Street Corridor Revitalization Plan – Community Planning “Charrette” held in June. The meeting will be held on Saturday, August 7, 2010, from 10:30AM- noon at the East District Initiative Building (701 N. 25th Street).

The Richmond Nine Mile Road/25th Street Corridor Revitalization Plan – Community Planning “Charrette” was held in the East End 7th District during a seven day period from June 1-7, 2010. This series of community meetings involved nearly 2,000 residents and stakeholders and included Councilwoman Newbille, Mayor Dwight Jones, Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority (RRHA), and Bon Secours Richmond Community Hospital. The goal of these meetings is to create a vision and plan for the revitalization of the Nine Mile Road/25th Street Corridor in Richmond’s Historic East End.
In preparing this plan, the consultant company DPZ was hired to assist with facilitating the Charrette and preparing reports to aid in producing a Richmond Nine Mile Road/25th Street Corridor Revitalization Plan.

Responding to reports of shooting at around 2:30AM this morning, Richmond Police found Shamarl O. Whittaker, 22, shot to death inside an apartment in the 1300 block of Jennie Scher Road. This is the 9th homicide in the East End in 2010 and Richmond’s 23rd this year.

Volunteers sought for NRC fundraiser

HandOn Greater Richmond is looking for volunteers to help out at the NRC to assist with “eco” stations & teach about recycling & composting on Sunday, July 25:

For this fundraiser benefiting the Neighborhood Resource Center, we need volunteers to assist event coordinator by monitoring “eco” stations – stations set up to collect trash, recycling, and compost. Volunteers will stand at an assigned eco station and help people determine which items go into which bins.
Volunteers will be briefed on which items go where and signs will also be placed on and around bins. At the end of the event, volunteers will be asked to weigh and record the trash, recycling, and compost collected from each eco station. Recycling, compost, and trash will be moved to one central location for easy pickup. Please note that volunteers must be able to life up to 25 pounds.
Required Attire: Comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes–things you don’t mind getting a little dirty.
Minimum age to volunteer: 14 (Individuals ages 17 and under must volunteer with an adult.)

Charges dropped against Harvin

The RTD is reporting that the murder charge against Andre Russell Harvin in the May 27th death Jameal Smith. Declaring it an act of self-defense and a justified killing, this lowers the total number of homicides in Richmond so far in 2010 to 19.

Williams arrested again in 2009 death

Ashley Williams has been arrested and charged with the June 2009 death of her toddler son on the 1900 Block of Newman Road. She was charged in 2009, but the charges were later suspended. More evidence has recently come light, however, and the charges have been refiled.

An Afternoon with Eliza Poe

MINDS WIDE OPEN: Virginia Celebrates Women in the Arts is the first statewide celebration of its kind. Between March and June of 2010, thousands of special events will occur to honor contributions by women to arts and culture. Any individual or group can participate by presenting at least one public program focused on women.

St. John’s Church’s cemetery is the final resting place of Elizabeth Arnold Poe, Edgar Allan Poe’s birth mother and an accomplished stage actress in her day. Eliza was known for her theatrical versatility, her comedic skill, and her beautiful singing voice. She was twenty-four when she passed away in Richmond in 1811, and at the time of her death she was on her way to achieving national stardom. Eliza Poe will tell about her tragically short life story and perform selections from her vast repertoire.

Urban Views Weekly profiles ChildSavers and AJ Starke, the man behind today’s massive motorcycle ride to Chimborazo Park:

Credit the vision of one Chesterfield native, AJ Starke. Starke, a Chesterfield County Police Lieutenant, founded The Tuskegee Airmen Motorcycle Club of Virginia in May 2006 and not long after, made a cold call to ChildSavers with his idea for the Ride for Children.

“When people hear ‘Tuskegee Airman,’ they think about the pilots,” Starke says. “What we have learned through history is that was a time when people came together. There was the ground crew. There were the people who worked in the office. It was a time when segregation came to an end and people realized that when we come together, we can get more done for our community.”

Thieves take cash, puppy

Police say someone stole cash and took off with the family’s newest member, a 6-week-old pit bull puppy. It happened in the 1200 block of Garber Street and when news of a stolen pup spread, it didn’t sit well with residents.

The Richmond National Cemetery on Williamsburg Road was established on September 1, 1866. Reinterments included 3,200 bodies, mostly unknown, removed from Oakwood Cemetery; 210 (115 known) from the cemetery of the Belle Isle Confederate Prison in Richmond; 12 deceased prisoners of war from a trench at the Rocketts Landing; 388 (all known but 18) from Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond; and remains from the Cold Harbor and Seven Pines battlefields, as well as from locations in Chesterfield and Hanover Counties. Some seventy different locations within a maximum distance of 25 miles of the cemetery site were searched in order that Union dead might be accorded honored burial in a national cemetery.

One unknown Confederate soldier was reinterred in the cemetery on April 7, 1978. An employee of a local radio station was relic hunting near the banks of Beaverdam Creek in Hanover County and discovered the remains. There were several Minie balls, and the hunter had presumed that four had struck the soldier. There were buttons and a belt buckle among the items that had triggered the alarm on his metal detector.

By deed dated July 29, 1867, the first tract of land, consisting of 3+ acres, was purchased from Mr. William Slater for $900. A parcel containing 5 acres was purchased for $1,500 by deed dated July 10, 1868, from Mr. William L. Williams and Ms. Ann B. Brown. By deed dated June 23, 1906, a parcel
consisting of 1.74 acres was purchased from Mr. George Geffert for $1,392.

The graves were originally marked by headboards, painted white, and properly lettered. The boards were later replaced with upright marble markers. As of January 31, 1995, there were 7,325 graves used for the interment of 9,147 casketed remains and 38 sites used for the interment of 52 cremated remains. Of the 9,199 total interments, 5,706 are unknown Civil War soldiers.

The cemetery was officially closed in August 1963; however, interments in occupied graves, as well as interments of cremated remains, continue. As of January 31, 1995, there were 150 gravesites available for the interment of casketed remains (all reserved), and there were 63 sites available for cremated remains.

A 16-foot octagonal iron gazebo, Chinese Chippendale in style, was constructed circa 1890 in the northeast segment of the cemetery. The gazebo was removed in 1952, leaving only a concrete base and floor.

There are four monuments located in the area of the flagpole circle, each 7 feet 6 inches in height and made of an original cast-iron seacoast artillery tube, secured by a concrete base. The inscription on the cast-bronze plaque affixed to one of the monuments reads as follows: United States National Military Cemetery Richmond / Established September 1st, 1866 / Interments 6,529 / Known 838 / Unknown 5,691

Family Dollar robbed yesterday

The RTD has word on a robbery:
Richmond police officers are investigating the armed robbery of a Family Dollar store at 1720 Williamsburg Road. An employee was forced to empty the safe by an unknown male carrying a large handgun about 12:40 p.m. yesterday, Richmond Police Capt. Paul Kiniry said this morning.

Man shot to death on Euclid Avenue

The RTD is reporting that Jameal Smith was found shot to death last night at around 10:30PM last night in the 5500 block of Euclid Avenue.
This is the first killing in the Fulton area in almost 18 months. There hasn’t been a non-domestic homicide in the area in 2 1/2 years. This is Richmond’s 20th killing of the year and 7th for 2010 in the East End.

Police seeking suspect in Family Dollar robbery

Richmond Police needs the public’s help identifying and locating the man who robbed the Family Dollar at 1720 Williamsburg Road at gunpoint on Friday:
Shortly after 11 a.m. April 23, a man walked up to one of the registers with items as if he were going to make a purchase. He then displayed a gun and demanded the cashier give him money from the cash register. He also ordered the store manager to open the safe.
The robbery suspect is a black male, 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall. He wore dark sunglasses, a black baseball cap with a yellow “P” on it, a black hooded jacket with a yellow design on the front, dark jeans and black-and-white shoes. The suspect also has a tattoo or distinct birthmark under his right eye. A photo from store surveillance video accompanies this advisory.
Anyone with information about this robbery suspect is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
