Episode 15

With this 15th episode of the Bopst Show here on RVA News, I have equaled what I used to do in a week for WCLM 1450 AM. Having looked at life from both sides now (traditional radio broadcasting vs. podcasting), I can safely say that this gig is the better of the two. Doing the radio 5-days a week is a motherfucker especially considering that everything pertaining to my show began and ended with me. Nobody, and I mean absolutely nobody, lifted finger one at any radio station that I was on to help me in any capacity whatsoever with my program. I was the talent, the producer, the programmer, the salesman, the promoter and the webmaster. In order to make my show a broadcasting reality, that was the only way it ever was going to happen. I had to do everything myself.

Since I walked out of WCLM a couple of months ago, there has not been a single day that has gone by that someone hasn’t said something to me about how much they miss the show on the radio. I always smile and say thank you as I greatly appreciate that anyone derived enjoyment from my presentation of music, but, to be honest, I am much happier not doing it. For almost 6 years, it was all I did. The only way I could continue to do my show on the radio would be to sacrifice everything else in my life to do it again and I’m tired of being a one-man crusade to prove that musical variety can be beneficial to listeners and advertisers alike.

Many people have suggested that I should get a show on WRIR. As much as I value everything that station stands for, my eternal goal is to prove my show financially. In order to do that, I want and have to be on a commercial station. I used to think that money was a bad thing, but without it, good ideas are just that: ideas. Money makes ideas realities. You would not be able to visit this site unless someone was paying attention to the bottom line. Debate the corrupting influence of it if you want, but there is no debating the fact that without cold hard cash, the essential creative outlets in this city would not exist.

And besides, the real trick is making a living doing something you love. Otherwise it’s just a hobby that costs you money. I prefer pursuing the latter. In the next couple of months (fingers crossed), you will be able to hear the fruits of this labor. Stay tuned for the latest developments…

The set list for this week’s show is posted on my MySpace page. Previous show set lists are on my blog.

Until Next Time:

Stay Clean,
BOPST
