It’s too bad Bill Hicks isn’t around anymore. He nailed truth with a vengeance. The opening bit of his (“Rush Limbaugh”) that opens the 10th edition of the Bopst Show here on RVA News is taken from his posthumous release, “Rant In E Minor”. I strongly suggest seeking that recording out because even though Hicks left this earth in February of 1994, his biting comedic insights are still relevant today. The man was right about everything.
Maybe it is a good thing he no longer amongst the living because, if he were alive today, these modern times most certainly would have killed him.
Another scat muncher in our midst is Ross Mackenzie. The patron saint of conservative, um, for lack of a better word, “thought” for the dwindling Richmond Times Dispatch, Ross is supposed to be retired but he keeps reappearing every Sunday like a zombie insisting that all the world’s problems can be laid at the feet of liberals. Oh, how I wish that were true, Ross. It would make everything so much easier to blame the entirety of the world’s problems on liberals but given the state of the economy, gas prices and two wars (three if you count the never ending Drug War), such conclusions, while soothing to partisan true believers, are obviously seriously flawed. And that seems to be his forte: drawing seriously flawed conclusions. Despite the overwhelming evidence of the lies, corruption and ineptitude of the current (and I will always believe illegitimate) administration, Ross dismisses facts and continues to be a cheerleader for the decider and his corporate cronies. Reading his columns, one would logically deduce that he is on Bush’s media payroll. Remember Jeff Gannon? The fake journalist for a fake partisan news source (Talon News) that was a favorite of the White House who turned out to be a male escort? I’d bet anything Mr. Mackenzie still believes that he was an actual journalist. The man seems to not have a single brain cell capable of nuanced thought. Reading his columns it becomes painfully evident that Ross is just unrepentant another shill for an administration that will go down in history (if we do have a history) as the single worst since our country’s inception.
Mackenzie just can’t seem to lay off the scat…
On this week’s installment of the Bopst Show, you’ll hear classics by John Cale, Brother Bones and the greatest one hit wonders of all time (at least so far) Althea & Donna. Like previous episodes of this music loving show, there are a whole lot of good tunes worthy of valuable listening time in any ear hole.
And always remember to fill those holes with the good stuff.
The set list for this week’s show is posted on my MySpace page. Previous show set lists are on my blog.

The world has just got a little less funny. George Carlin dead today at the age of 71…

and on the day the man that gave us the 7 dirty words you can’t say on television, this happens in Norfolk (thanks Brent):
NORFOLK — Organizers of a Town Point Park festival have pressed charges and are apologizing after a performer used profanity twice within a two-minute period this weekend. The Bayou Boogaloo and Cajun Festival was winding down about 9:30 p.m. Saturday when the performer used an “embellishment of the F-word,” according to organizers. A stage manager promptly motioned Raymond “Boots” Riley off the stage. He was cooperative and left the park, organizers said. He faces a misdemeanor violation, but details were not available. Organizers say this is the first time in 26 years they’ve pressed charges against a performer.

Chris,
I am quite familiar with the Bayou Boogaloo story. To say that at that time it is a family affair is being unfair. At 9:30PM, people are wasted. They are just trying to cover their asses from the Af’ram fest debacle, when residents complained about the language used during performances. Not surprising though, this is an area which arrested a manager from Ambocrombie & Fitch (sp?) for displaying a lewd advertisement. God I can’t wait to get out of this pit they call Tidewater, excuse me, Hampton Roads…
Yeah, that area has always given me the serious heebie jeebies.
and here’s an update on all this from our friends at Fox News:

bopst give me some more info please on the chris mccormick sharp little teeth business, cant find anything about it on the internet, you told me you got it from ward but i havent had a chance to check up with him about it, i think i need to have a copy
Sadly, Ward doesn’t have anymore copies of that crucial, 3-inch CD entitled, “Andrew McCormick: Sharp Little Teeth”. It’s a great listen because when I have played it for some people, it creeped them out for reasons I can not fully comprehend. Either way, every time I played it on the radio, someone would always call and ask who it was.
i would like to request that you play a different off it in up coming shows until its all used up. So its out there. For consumption.
alrighty then…I’ll fill that request if you promise to keep listening….deal?
Another great show. Hadn’t heard about the Bayou incident. That is sad and funny at the same time. Good thing those folks don’t listen to this show. Maybe they should. The Frank Black tune reminded of his former band the Pixies. What a great 80’s/90’s band that was. Sorry I missed the Daniel Johnston show.
So what will happen to More On Sports come August? Haven’t heard peep one about it, and would hate to hear that we football fans will have to watch ESPN instead.
dont have to worry about that. been with you since the 1320 days. since you went to 1450 i think i listened almost everyday for however many years that was. I feel like your my buddy though we have never met. 1 hour a week is tough but better than nothing. keep up the good work
Thanks for listening…
